Summary

Welcome to the 2017 Rock Program!  Registration opens on Wednesday, March 15th at 8:00pm.  If you want to take the program, submit your application no later than Friday, March 17th at 2:30pm.  If there are any spots in the program left after that, they will be filled on a first-come first-served basis.

Registration process

In the past, registration for the Rock Program has been first-come first-served.  However, last year the program filled up in two hours.  In order to give everyone a fair chance at getting in to the program, we are trying a different registration process this year.  Registration will occur in two phases:

Phase 1 - Lottery-based admission.  Fill out a short application form on our website to apply for the 2017 Rock Program.  At the end of this phase we will see how many people have applied.  If it is less than the program capacity, we'll admit everyone.  If the program is oversubscribed, we will hold a lottery (random drawing) to determine who is admitted to the program.  If you are admitted, you will have to complete the registration on our web site and pay the registration fee in a timely manner.  Those not selected in the lottery will be put on the waitlist in a randomized order.

Phase 2 - First-come first-served registration for remaining spots.  If the program is not yet full, the remaining spots will be filled on a first-come first-served basis.  If the program is full at this point, you can submit a short application form to be added to the end of the waitlist.

Phase 1 (application for lottery-based admission) will open on Wednesday March 15, 2017, at 8:00pm (at the end of the optional Information Session) and will close on Friday March 17 at 2:30pm.  There is no rush to get your application for the program, so long as it is done by Friday at 2:30pm.  At that point, we will conduct the lottery if it is necessary.  (It may take us a few hours to do this and to notify everyone.)

The Phase 1 application form will have a spot to indicate if you want to take the program with a friend/spouse/SO/etc.  The lottery will be conducted in such a way that either both of you or neither of you will be selected and so that being part of such a pair does not give you an advantage or disadvantage in the lottery.   For those who are curious, I plan to post the mathematics behind conducting such a lottery before registration opens.

Ready to register?

Please note the following policies before you register!

  • Equipment: We have added a requirement this year that all students have a locking carabiner; this is to anchor yourself while we are working at the top of the cliff (setting up anchors, etc.) and for belaying.  If you are borrowing a harness from us, we will include one with the harness. (See Q21 of the FAQ for more details.)
  • Refund policy: Requests for refunds must be made to the Program Director at rock@amcbostonclimbers.com at least 7 days before the first program weekend (Belay & Anchors weekend).  No refunds will be made after that.  Of course if there is some unforeseen circumstance that occurs, please contact the Program Director to discuss.
  • Liability waiver:  All students in the program will be required to sign the AMC liability waiver.
  • Makeup policy:  Please note that both days of Belay & Anchors weekend are required and we do not offer a makeup of those days.  You can makeup one (and only one) of the other program weekends on Optional Weekend (which is only the Saturday of that weekend).

Please note that Phase 1 registration has ended, and we have more applicants to the program than we will be able to accept, so registration is now closed.  The dates for our 2018 program should be available on our website in November 2017. Thanks for your interest in the Rock Program!
