Have you started climbing in a gym, but want to take your skills outside? Are you an avid hiker who wants to ascend steeper terrain? Or are you just looking for a fun and exciting outdoor sport? Come learn to rock climb with the Appalachian Mountain Club!

The Boston Mountaineering Committee’s annual Rock Climbing Program teaches basic outdoor climbing skills. Upon graduating, you will have all the techniques needed to safely follow a leader on a multipitch climb.  The course focuses on traditional (or "trad") climbing, but also serves as a solid foundation for toproping and sport climbing.

Some of the skills we cover include:

  • How to belay a lead climber
  • How to build a toprope anchor
  • How to get down off a climb by rappelling
  • How to ascend a rope

Our program is entirely volunteer run and taught, and it offers new climbers the opportunity to meet and learn from our local community of climbing enthusiasts.

Class schedule

The program consists of one weeknight session held at a location to be determined, and four weekend sessions held at Quincy Quarries, just south of Boston in the Blue Hills Reservation.

  • Knots night (location to be announced)
  • Belay & Anchor weekend (Saturday AND Sunday) at Quincy Quarries
  • Rappel weekend (Saturday OR Sunday) at Quincy Quarries
