On Saturday, Oct. 6, at 6:00 p.m., the Gunks Climbers' Coalition and Mohonk Preserve will host the Gunks Climbing Film Festival at the Studley Theater at SUNY New Paltz - an evening to celebrate climbing, conservation and the passion of the Gunks community!
The Festival will be premiering this year’s No Man’s Land collection of short films that are un-defining what it means to be a woman in adventure, sport and film. Also featured will be the full-length film Dirtbag – The Legend of Fred Beckey, directed by Dave O’Leske. Beckey is the legendary American "dirtbag" mountaineer whose name is spoken in hushed tones around campfires. This rebel climber's pioneering ascents and lifestyle form an iconic legacy that continues to inspire generations. Event sponsors will be donating various prizes to a raffle to win awesome climbing gear. Prior to the screening, the Gunks Grunt Pull-up Contest, sponsored by Furnace Industries, will be held to test the mettle of attendees with prizes to top male and female winners.
On Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7, local climbing guide services will host a series of free Safe Climbing Clinics at Mohonk Preserve. Check with Rock and Snow after Oct. 1 for a schedule and to sign up at 845-255-1311.
Sponsors of the 20th Annual Gunks Climbing Film Festival include Rock and Snow, Furnace Industries, The Cliffs Climbing, Patagonia, BC Climbing Gym, Time to Climb, the SUNY New Paltz Outing Club, and Bacchus.
